Prepare for Your Couples Photography Session
Couples photos do not need to feel overly posed, romantic on command, or like something you saw someone else do on Pinterest.
The goal is to create photographs that actually feel like the two of you.
Whether you’re celebrating an engagement, anniversary, milestone, date night, or simply want photographs together because it’s been way too long, a little preparation can help you arrive feeling comfortable and ready to enjoy the experience.
Whether your session takes place at Coastal Photo Studio or somewhere along the Oregon Coast, this guide will help you plan what to wear, what to bring, and what to expect.
Coordinate — You Don’t Have to Match
Your outfits should look like they belong in the same photograph without looking like you bought a matching set.
Start with a simple color story and build from there.
Think about:
- Complementary colors
- Different textures
- Layers
- Similar levels of dressiness
- Clothing that works with your session location
If one person is wearing a bold pattern, let the other outfit stay a little simpler.
If one of you is dressed for cocktails and the other looks ready to mow the lawn, we may have a problem. Otherwise, you have plenty of room to make it your own.
What to Wear
Choose clothes that make you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourselves.
Helpful guidance:
- Avoid very small, busy patterns.
- Avoid large logos or distracting graphics unless they are intentionally part of the look.
- Layers photograph beautifully and give us easy variety.
- Texture adds interest without overwhelming the photograph.
- Make sure clothing fits comfortably when sitting, standing, walking, and moving.
- Check shoes, socks, belts, and underlayers.
- Empty bulky items from pockets before we begin.
- Bring another outfit or layer if your session includes a wardrobe change.
You do not need to completely change your personal style for photographs.
If you never wear dresses, you don’t suddenly need one because you booked a couples session.
Hair, Grooming & the Little Details
You do not need professional hair or makeup unless you want it.
Before your session, take a quick look at the things that are easy to overlook:
- Hair styled the way you want it photographed
- Facial hair trimmed or groomed if desired
- Clean glasses
- Clean hands and nails
- Wrinkle-free clothing
- Lint and pet hair removed
- Hair ties removed from wrists
- Phones, keys, wallets, and bulky items removed from pockets
Wearing a ring you want photographed?
Engagement rings, wedding rings, anniversary rings, and other meaningful jewelry often end up in close-up photographs.
Giving your hands and jewelry a quick once-over before your session never hurts.
What to Bring
Depending on your session, you may want to bring:
- Additional outfit or layering options
- Hairbrush or comb
- Makeup or touch-up items
- Water
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Meaningful jewelry
- A small personal item that relates to your story
- Jackets or blankets for colder outdoor sessions
- Pet supplies if your pet is joining us
You do not need to bring a trunk full of props.
If something genuinely means something to the two of you, bring it.
Otherwise, you are the subject.
You Do Not Need to Practice Posing
Really.
You do not need to arrive with a list of poses memorized.
I’ll guide you through where to stand, where to put your hands, where to look, and when to interact with each other.
Some photographs may be more traditionally posed. Others may involve walking, talking, laughing, leaning into each other, or simply giving you something to do so you can forget about the camera for a minute.
The goal is not to make you perform your relationship.
It’s to create enough direction that the two of you can relax into it.
And you set the comfort level.
Every couple is different.
If you are affectionate and comfortable being close, great.
If kissing in front of a camera makes you want to crawl into the ocean and disappear, we absolutely do not need to build your session around kissing.
There are plenty of ways to show connection without forcing something that does not feel natural to you.
Studio Couples Sessions
Couples sessons at Coastal Photo Studio give us a controlled environment with professional lighting and different backdrop and setup possibilities.
Studio sessions are great when you want photographs that feel clean and polished, cozy and connected, dramatic, playful, or a combination of several looks.
Before you arrive:
- Come dressed and ready to begin unless we’ve discussed changing at the studio.
- Bring additional clothing neatly organized if you have outfit options.
- Know your preferred backdrop or general look if we’ve discussed one.
- Bring only the items you reasonably expect to use.
- Arrive close to your appointment time rather than excessively early.
You do not need to know what to do once you step in front of the lights.
That part is mine.
Outdoor & Oregon Coast Couples Sessions
Photographing couples outdoors gives us room to move, explore, and make the location part of the story.
It also means working with the Oregon Coast.
Wind, temperature changes, sand, damp ground, clouds, and rapidly changing light are all normal here.
What to consider
Layers
The beach can feel dramatically colder than town, especially once the sun starts going down.
Shoes
Bring footwear that allows you to safely walk to the location, even if you plan to change shoes or photograph barefoot once we get there.
Wind
Choose hairstyles and clothing that can move naturally rather than requiring everything to stay perfectly in place.
The ground
Trails, beaches, fields, rocks, and other outdoor locations may mean uneven or damp terrain.
Something warm
A jacket or blanket you can use between photographs can make a huge difference.
Cloudy weather is not bad weather
Cloudy Oregon Coast skies can create beautiful, soft portrait light.
A lack of sunshine does not automatically mean we have bad photography weather.
Rain and severe weather
If conditions genuinely prevent us from photographing safely or comfortably, we’ll communicate about rescheduling or adjusting our plan.
During Your Couples Session
We’ll create a mix of photographs depending on your session, location, personalities, and available time.
That may include:
- Looking at the camera together
- Individual portraits
- Walking and movement
- Close-up details
- More relaxed candid moments
- Seated photographs
- Different combinations of standing, sitting, and interacting
- Photographs that focus more on connection than posing
You do not need to be serious the whole time.
You do not need to smile in every photograph either.
We’ll create variety.
And if you laugh because something feels ridiculous for a second, there is a very good chance that becomes one of the photographs you love.
Bringing Your Pet
If your dog — or another pet — is part of your story, ask about including them.
Bring:
- A leash
- Favorite treats
- Waste bags
- Water if needed
- Anything that helps them feel comfortable
Having another person available to take the pet once we’ve finished their photographs can also be incredibly helpful if you want part of the session to focus only on the two of you.
If Your Session Includes Studio + Outdoor Photography
Some couples sessions may include both studio portraits and an outdoor or on-location portion.
If we are doing both, keep additional outfits, shoes, jackets, and touch-up items organized so transitioning between locations is easy.
Simple changes can create plenty of variety.
A jacket, different shirt, accessory change, or second layer can completely change the look of a photograph without requiring a full wardrobe overhaul in the middle of your session.
Travel and transition time are part of the overall session plan, so being ready to move helps us spend more of that time actually photographing.

TL;DR
Coordinate your outfits without matching exactly, bring any extra layers or accessories you want to use, and don’t worry about knowing how to pose — I’ll guide you through everything.
If we’re heading outdoors, bring comfortable shoes, layers, and be ready for Oregon Coast weather. If your session includes both studio and outdoor photographs, keep outfit changes simple and organized.
You’re welcome to bring your pet, meaningful items, or anything that helps the session feel more like the two of you.
Most importantly: you do not need to perform for the camera. Show up, be yourselves, and I’ll take care of the rest.
