Prepare for Your Celebration Photography Session
Birthdays, milestones, graduations, cake smashes, anniversaries, accomplishments, and sometimes simply having something worth celebrating — these sessions are meant to be fun.
Celebration sessions can be simple and polished, colorful and themed, completely over-the-top, or somewhere in between.
Whether we’re photographing in the studio, outdoors on the Oregon Coast, or creating something custom, this guide will help you plan what to wear, what to bring, and what to expect.
Start With What You’re Celebrating
There is no single formula for a celebration session.
These sessions may include:
- Birthdays
- Cake smashes
- Graduations
- Anniversaries
- Personal milestones
- Career or business accomplishments
- Themed portraits
- Quinceañera or birthday portraits
- “Just because” sessions
- Creative ideas that do not fit neatly into another photography category
If you have a theme, color palette, prop idea, or something unusual in mind, let me know before your session.
The earlier we plan, the more intentional we can make it.
What to Wear
Your clothing can be as simple or as celebratory as you want.
Think about:
- The colors in your setup
- Your backdrop or location
- Whether you want something casual or dressed up
- Movement and comfort
- Shoes and accessories
- Whether you will be changing outfits
If your setup has a lot of color, patterns, decorations, or props, a simpler outfit may photograph best.
If the setup is minimal, your clothing can become more of the statement.
Most importantly, wear something that feels appropriate for what you’re celebrating.
Bring Options — But Not Your Entire Closet
If your session allows multiple looks, bring a few thoughtful options.
You may want:
- A second outfit
- Jacket or layer
- Different shoes
- Jewelry
- Birthday crown or sash
- Graduation cap and gown
- Meaningful keepsakes
- Signs or small props
- Something connected to a hobby, accomplishment, or milestone
A handful of intentional items usually works better than bringing everything you might possibly use.
Props & Decorations
Props are welcome when they help tell the story.
If you are bringing your own decorations or props, please let me know ahead of time — especially if they require setup, hanging, assembly, electricity, cleanup, or extra space.
Examples might include:
- Balloons
- Signs
- Flowers
- Cake stands
- Graduation items
- Confetti alternatives
- Themed decorations
- Specialty furniture or larger items
Not every decoration works safely or practically inside the studio, so unusual setups should always be discussed in advance.
Cake Smash Sessions
Cake smashes are absolutely welcome at Coastal Photo Studio.
Because cake smash sessions require additional cleanup and studio reset time, a $50 cleaning and reset fee applies.
Please let me know in advance that you are planning a cake smash so enough time can be reserved after your session to properly clean and prepare the studio for the next client.
A few cake smash tips
Consider bringing:
- The cake
- Cake stand or tray if using one
- Backup outfit
- Wipes
- Towels
- Diapers if applicable
- Water
- A favorite snack in case the cake is not a hit
- A change of clothes for the adult helping
And one very important thing:
Not every child wants to smash the cake.
Some dive straight in. Some delicately poke it with one finger. Some want absolutely nothing to do with it.
All of those reactions are photographable.
Planning Something Messy?
Messy and creative concepts are welcome — but they must be discussed and approved before your session.
This includes things like food, frosting, paint, liquids, powders, confetti, glitter, slime, dirt, or any other material that may require additional cleanup or studio reset time.
Any session that requires Coastal Photo Studio to block additional time for cleaning and resetting the space will include a $50 cleaning and reset fee.
The fee is not based on whether we technically make a mess. It applies when the planned setup requires extra time after your appointment before the studio can safely and properly welcome the next client.
This does not mean messy ideas are off limits.
It just means we need to plan for the cleanup as part of the session.
Please do not surprise me with a messy concept on session day.
Creative chaos is absolutely allowed — we just schedule for the chaos.
Please Ask Before Bringing Confetti, Glitter or Specialty Materials
Some materials are much harder to contain and clean than they appear.
Loose glitter especially has a way of becoming a permanent resident.
If you would like to use confetti, glitter, powder, paint, food, liquids, or another specialty material, please ask before your session.
We can determine whether it will work safely in the studio, whether an alternative would photograph just as well, and whether the $50 cleaning and reset fee will apply.
Studio Celebration Sessions
Celebration sessions at Coastal Photo Studio allow us to control lighting, backdrops, decorations, and the overall look of your photographs.
Before your session:
- Arrive ready to begin.
- Bring props and decorations organized.
- Let me know about anything requiring setup.
- Keep outfit changes easy to access.
- Make sure anything messy has been approved beforehand.
- Allow enough time to unload larger items if we have planned for them.
If we are creating a themed setup, we will work from the plan discussed before your appointment.
Outdoor & Oregon Coast Celebration Sessions
Celebrations do not have to stay inside.
Outdoor sessions can work beautifully for graduations, birthdays, anniversaries, milestone portraits, and creative concepts.
Remember that Oregon Coast locations may include:
- Wind
- Cooler temperatures
- Damp ground
- Sand
- Uneven terrain
- Rapidly changing weather
- Limited places to change clothes
Bring comfortable walking shoes, layers, and anything you need to protect your clothing or props while traveling to the location.
If you are bringing decorations outdoors, everything brought into the location must leave with us.
If Your Session Includes Studio + Outdoor Photography
Some celebration sessions may include both studio and outdoor photographs.
Keep wardrobe changes, props, and accessories organized so we can transition efficiently.
Simple changes such as a jacket, accessory, cap and gown, or second outfit can create plenty of variety without turning the middle of the session into a complete production reset.
Celebrating With Other People
Partners, friends, siblings, parents, or other important people may be included depending on the session you booked.
If others are participating:
- Coordinate clothing rather than matching exactly.
- Make sure everyone knows when and where they need to arrive.
- Tell me ahead of time how many people will be participating.
- Bring young children prepared with snacks, water, and anything they may need.
- Let me know if you want both group photographs and individual portraits.
The more people involved, the more helpful a little organization becomes.
Kids & Celebration Sessions
When children are involved, keep expectations flexible.
We may take breaks.
We may change the order of photographs.
We may photograph the birthday child before bringing out the cake.
We may abandon a pose entirely because something else is working better.
That is normal.
The goal is to document the celebration — not turn it into a battle over whether a two-year-old will sit in exactly the right spot.
What to Bring
Depending on your celebration, you may want:
- Outfit options
- Comfortable shoes
- Hair and makeup touch-up products
- Water
- Decorations
- Meaningful props
- Graduation items
- Cake or food that has been approved
- Towels or wipes for messy sessions
- Backup clothing
- Items connected to the milestone
- A bag or container for taking decorations home afterward
If something requires special setup or cleanup, please discuss it with me before your session.
During Your Celebration Session
We’ll build the session around what you’re celebrating and the type of photographs you want.
That may include:
- Traditional portraits
- Full-length photographs
- Detail photographs
- Candid reactions
- Movement
- Props
- Cake smash photographs
- Group portraits
- Individual portraits
- Creative lighting
- More playful or dramatic setups
You do not have to spend the entire session smiling at the camera.
Celebration photographs should have personality.
After a Messy Session
For cake smashes and other approved messy concepts, we will leave time in the studio schedule for cleanup and resetting the space.
Please plan to take all personal belongings, decorations, food, containers, clothing, and other items with you when you leave.
If children need to be cleaned up before leaving, bringing wipes, towels, and a clean outfit makes everyone’s life easier.
Especially yours.
What Happens After Your Session?
After your photographs are prepared, you’ll receive a private online gallery.
Depending on the session you booked, your gallery may allow you to select included photographs, purchase digital images, order printed products, or upgrade your collection.
Your gallery instructions will explain exactly what is included and what options are available.
