Prepare for Your Maternity Photography Session
Maternity sessions are about documenting this season of your life in a way that feels beautiful, comfortable, and true to you.
Whether you’re planning something simple and timeless in the studio, heading outdoors along the Oregon Coast, including your partner or children, or doing a combination of both, a little preparation can make the experience feel much easier.
This guide will help you plan what to wear, what to bring, and what to expect before your session.
Choose What Feels Like You
There is no single “right” way to do maternity photos.
Your session can feel:
- Soft and simple
- Elegant and polished
- Natural and relaxed
- Dramatic and artistic
- Casual and connected
- Romantic with your partner
- Family-focused with children included
You do not need to recreate someone else’s maternity session.
The best starting point is choosing a look that feels comfortable and believable for you.
What to Wear
Choose clothing that makes you feel comfortable and that photographs well from multiple angles.
Popular maternity options include:
- Fitted dresses that show your shape
- Flowing dresses or skirts
- Simple neutral clothing
- Bodysuits or fitted basics
- Layers such as robes, sweaters, jackets, or button-down shirts
- Bare belly looks if that feels comfortable for you
- Clothing with texture or movement
- Something more casual if formal maternity wear does not feel like your style
Try your outfit on ahead of time and make sure you can comfortably stand, sit, walk, and move in it.
If your session includes multiple looks, choose outfits that give us variety rather than several versions of the same outfit.
Undergarments Matter
This is one of those small details that can make a big difference.
Think about what will be visible under or around your clothing.
Depending on your outfit, you may want:
- Seamless undergarments
- Strapless options
- Neutral tones
- Shapewear only if you already know you are comfortable wearing it
- A bra that works with the neckline or straps of your outfit
Avoid trying something brand new on session day if you are not sure how it fits or feels.
Comfort matters.
Hair, Makeup & Grooming
Professional hair and makeup are optional.
If you are doing your own, prepare the way you normally would when you want to feel your best.
A few things to check before your session:
- Hair styled the way you want it photographed
- Clean, moisturized hands
- Nails maintained if desired
- Makeup blended and comfortable
- Jewelry selected intentionally
- Clothing steamed or wrinkle-free
- Hair ties removed from wrists
- Temporary marks or items removed when possible
If you plan to show your belly, you may also want to avoid tight waistbands immediately beforehand if you do not want temporary clothing marks visible.
What to Bring
Depending on your session, consider bringing:
- Additional outfit options
- Comfortable shoes
- Hairbrush or comb
- Makeup or touch-up products
- Water
- A robe or cover-up between setups
- Meaningful jewelry
- Baby shoes, ultrasound photographs, or another small keepsake
- A letterboard or sign only if it genuinely fits your style
- Partner or children’s outfit accessories if they are participating
You do not need a pile of maternity props.
A few thoughtful items are usually more meaningful than trying to incorporate everything.
Studio Maternity Sessions
Studio maternity sessions take place at Coastal Photo Studio in downtown North Bend.
The studio gives us control over lighting, posing, backdrops, and the overall mood of your photographs.
Studio sessions work especially well for:
- Clean, timeless portraits
- Dramatic lighting
- Simple fitted looks
- Flowing fabric or movement
- Partner portraits
- Close-up details
- More private or minimal maternity looks
Bring your clothing options organized and easy to access.
If we are planning several looks, simple changes such as adding a robe, jacket, fabric layer, or accessory can create a lot of variety without requiring a complete outfit change every few minutes.
Outdoor & Oregon Coast Maternity Sessions
Outdoor maternity sessions can feel relaxed, natural, and connected to the landscape.
They also come with Oregon Coast realities: wind, changing temperatures, sand, uneven terrain, damp ground, and quickly changing light.
For outdoor maternity sessions:
- Bring comfortable shoes for walking between locations.
- Wear or bring layers for warmth.
- Bring a jacket or blanket to use between photographs.
- Choose outfits that can handle some movement from wind.
- Avoid clothing or shoes you would be upset to get sandy or damp.
- Let me know ahead of time if walking distance or terrain is a concern.
You do not need to sacrifice comfort for a pretty location.
We can choose locations and setups that work with your needs.
If Your Session Includes Studio + Outdoor Photography
Some maternity sessions may include both studio portraits and an outdoor portion.
If we are doing both, keep your wardrobe and accessories organized so we can transition efficiently.
Simple changes can create a very different look without requiring a full reset.
For example:
- Add or remove a layer
- Change jewelry
- Change shoes
- Switch from fitted to flowing
- Add a robe, sweater, or jacket
Travel and transition time are part of the session plan, so staying organized helps us spend more time photographing.
Including Your Partner
Partners are welcome to participate when included in your session.
Their clothing should coordinate with yours without matching exactly.
Simple, neutral, or understated clothing usually works well because the focus stays on your connection and your pregnancy.
Partner photographs may include:
- Standing together
- Seated portraits
- Close-up detail photographs
- Hands on your belly
- Walking or movement
- More natural interaction
They do not need to know how to pose either.
I will guide both of you.
Including Children
Older siblings can be a beautiful part of a maternity session.
If children are participating:
- Keep their clothing comfortable.
- Bring snacks and water.
- Avoid clothing that needs constant adjusting.
- Bring a favorite small item if it helps them settle.
- Keep expectations realistic.
We may photograph children first, especially if they are young, so they are not waiting around while we work through adult portraits.
Not every child will want to cooperate with every pose, and that is completely normal.
You Do Not Need to Know How to Pose
Maternity posing is guided.
I will help with:
- Hand placement
- Body positioning
- Where to look
- How to shift your weight
- How to create flattering lines
- When to sit or stand
- When to interact with your partner or children
You do not need to practice in advance unless doing so helps you feel more comfortable.
Your only job is to show up and communicate if something feels uncomfortable.
Comfort Comes First
Pregnancy can make certain positions, movements, or lengths of time more tiring than usual.
You are always welcome to speak up if you need:
- A break
- Water
- To sit down
- To adjust a pose
- To change an outfit
- To skip something entirely
There is no photograph worth making you uncomfortable.
We can adapt as we go.
During Your Maternity Session
We’ll create a mix of photographs based on the session you booked and the people participating.
That may include:
- Full-length maternity portraits
- Seated portraits
- Close-up details
- Partner photographs
- Sibling photographs
- Individual portraits
- Movement
- More traditional posing
- More relaxed moments
- Bare belly or covered looks depending on your comfort level
You do not need to smile in every photograph.
We will create variety.
What Happens After Your Session?
After your photographs are prepared, you’ll receive a private online gallery.
Depending on the session you booked, your gallery may allow you to select included images, purchase digital photographs, order printed products, or upgrade your collection.
Your gallery instructions will explain exactly what is included and what options are available.
